LGBTQ Individuals Who Have Held the Post of Attorney General

Lgbtqlaw.png

The Attorney General is the principal legal advisor to government. They are often involved in prosecutions, law enforcement, and legal affairs of state. The position can also be known as Advocate General. Their general mission is to protect citizens, promote progress, and support civil rights.

While varying from one jurisdiction to the next due to statutory and constitutional mandates, the role of attorney general typically includes:

  • Issuing formal opinions to state agencies
  • Acting as public advocates in areas such as child support enforcement, consumer protections, antitrust and utility regulation
  • Proposing legislation
  • Enforcing federal and state environmental laws
  • Representing the state and state agencies before the state and federal courts
  • Handling criminal appeals and serious statewide criminal prosecutions
  • Instituting civil suits on behalf of the state
  • Representing the public’s interests in charitable trust and solicitations
  • Operating victim compensation programs

Given the high profile of the role, having an LGBTQ individual holding the position presents visibility and a role model for members of the community. It reinforces the equality of individuals within society regardless of sexual orientation. LGBTQ Attorney General successes are representative of the successes of the entire LGBTQ community.

The closest thing to an advocacy group for LGBTQ Attorneys General is the Democratic Attorneys General Association and The National Association of Attorneys General, both located in the United States.

We have identified LGBTQ individuals who have held the post of Attorney General from Canada, Great Britain, Israel, New Zealand, South Africa, and The United States. To read more and see the complete list, click HERE

Announcing Our New Documentary Project - Being Different: 101 Global LGBTQ Individuals Who Changed the World

Beingdifferentdoc.png

Despite adversity and discrimination, LGBTQ individuals have excelled throughout history. Yet historians and academics have conveniently participated in the heterosexist erasure of these LGBTQ contributions by omitting the LGBTQ status of prominent historical figures from academic and historical documents. Accordingly, there are relatively few comprehensive projects which document and showcase the influence of these LGBTQ efforts.

Being Different: 101 Global LGBTQ Individuals Who Changed The World will be an original documentary outlining the contributions that members of the LGBTQ community have made, individually and collectively, to changing the world.

We are now Crowdfunding to get this project off the ground. We would love to have you as part of our team. You can help us and SUPPORT THIS PROJECT!

Our goal is to make QueerBio.com the go-to website for global biographical information on LGBTQ identified individuals. To do this requires a serious commitment of people and resources, so we need your help to fund and help this project grow.
