Description
Art Historian. Professor at the University of California Berkeley in the Art History department, and formerly with Northwestern University. Honorary Visiting Professor of Art History at the University of York, UK, where he leads the annual York Summer Theory Institute in Art History (YSTI). Has made contributions to the field of queer theory and LGBTQ studies, including the 1998 essay "'Homosexualism,' Gay and Lesbian Studies, and Queer Theory in Art History." Has published 10 books, including The Canonical Tradition in Ancient Egyptian Art (Cambridge, 1989), Replications: Archaeology, Art History, Psychoanalysis (Penn State, 1996), A General Theory of Visual Culture (Princeton, 2011), Visuality and Virtuality: Images and Pictures from Prehistory to Perspective (Princeton, 2017), and Visions of Art History (Edinburgh University Press, 2025), as well as over 125 articles, chapters and essays.
