Description
Briefly Vice President of the United States (1853) for six weeks before his death. Formerly involved in local politics in North Carolina, then a Representative from North Carolina (1811-1816), Senator (1819-1844, and 1848-1852), and Minister to France (1844-1846). Democratic Party member. A notable player in the politics of the country during the pre-civil war period who was known as a moderate on the issues that divided the North from the South. Lived for 13 years until his death with James Buchanan who became the fifteenth President of the United States. Never publicly acknowledged his homosexuality, in conformity with the time in which he lived. Also known as William Rufus Duvane King.
