Description

Poet and translator. Co-editor of the books 'Eight Oxford Poets' (1941), and 'Oxford Poetry' (1942–43). Held the Gregory Fellowship of Poetry at Leeds University (1952–55) and professorships in Alexandria (1955–58) and Ann Arbor, Michigan (1960-61). Teacher at the College of St Mark and St John in Chelsea (1962–72) and Merton College, Oxford (1972-1992). Member, Royal Society of Literature (1954) and Order of the British Empire (1989). Recipient of the Queen's Gold Medal for Poetry (1973). Author of his memoirs 'Hindsights' (1993). Notable works include 'Collected Poems' (1988).
