Born as a male (Robert Cowell), had successful sex reassignment surgery in 1951 to a female, being the first transsexual woman to undergo male to female sex change surgery.  Identifies as intersexed, as distinguished from homosexual or transvestite.  Autobiography ('Roberta Cowell's Story') is an important contribution to these differences.  Founded a motor-racing team and competed in events across Europe post-war.
