Leading figure of the modernist movement.  Poet, critic.  Notable works include the poetry collection 'Paulicéia Desvairada (Hallucinated City, 1922) and his novel 'Macunaíma' (1928).  Founding director of São Paulo's Department of Culture (1935-1945).
