==Description==

Classical opera music composer.  Notable works include 'The Consul' (1950, Pulitzer Prize) and 'The Saint of Bleecker Street' (1955, Pulitzer Prize).  Composed his Christmas opera 'Amahl and the Night Visitors' for NBC, the first opera ever written for television in America.  Recipient of a Kennedy Center Honor (1984).  In 2010, the main theatre in Spoleto, Italy was renamed as the 'Teatro Nuovo Gian Carlo Menotti'.  Partner was composer [[Samuel Barber]].
