Attorney General (1839-1865) to the Cape Colony, followed by his membership of the Legislative Assembly (1865-1873).  Drafter of the Cape Colony's first constitution, which prohibited discrimination based on race.  Lifelong companion of Hugh Lynar.  Lawyer.
