Transgender filmmakers bring their unique experiences and outlook to their profession. They are important players in presenting and educating the viewing public on their community, its history, and the challenges faced by transgender individuals.

[[Kimberly Reed]] of the United States was the first transgender filmmaker to have a documentary film, 'Prodigal Sons', theatrically released in the country, while sisters [[Lana Wachowski]] and [[Lilly Wachowski]] are famed for their films including 'The Matrix'.  

The Trans Film Mentorship is an organization that runs hands-on career development programming for trans and nonbinary people with the aim of increasing the presence of trans filmmakers, key creatives and crew on set. The program combines mindfulness-based career development workshops with skills training and work placement on the sets of films, TV shows and documentaries.

Trans Film Mentorship announced its first Trans Filmmakers Summit at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) in 2022 with the goal of reimagining trans storytelling as an opportunity for community-building and nurturing emerging trans talent.  The organization honours leading-edge transgender filmmakers with its Trans Barrier Breaker Award.  

Disclosure offers a Trans Filmmaking Fellowships to transgender people interested in pursuing a filmmaking career. The fellowship opportunity provided a daily stipend, meals, networking opportunities with industry professionals, hands-on training, and mentorship.
