Former English Professor, Wesleyan University.  Served as the first [[F. O. Matthiesson]] Visiting Professor of Gender and Sexuality at Harvard University.  Author of the books 'The Evangelist of Desire: John Wesley and the Methodists' (1990), 'The Lesbian and Gay Studies Reader' (1993, editor), and 'Deep Gossip' (2003).
