==Description==

Campaigner for sexual reform. Author, legal advisor.  Developed a biological theory of homosexuality, called 'third sex' theory.  Pioneer of the modern gay rights movement - became the first self-proclaimed homosexual to speak out publicly for homosexual rights when he pleaded at the Congress of German Jurists in Munich for a resolution urging the repeal of anti-homosexual laws.  Was dismissed from his job in the civil bureaucracy when he was revealed to be gay.  Though he wrote prolifically, his books were often banned and confiscated.  The International Lesbian and Gay Law Association presents a Karl Heinrich Ulrichs Award for distinguished contributions to the advancement of LGBTI equality.
