Poet, novelist, and playwright, notable for his topics in religion and sexuality.  Part of the Harlem Renaissance group of artists and poets.  Notable poetry works include 'Powerful Long Ladder' (1944) and 'The Harlem Book of the Dead' (1978) and the poem 'Black Mother Praying', and play 'Bayou Legend' (1948).  Partner was critic [[Hilton Als]].
