Stage and film actor of the Belle Epoque period.  A pioneer of the silent film era.  Notable for playing controversial stage roles, such as Hamlet and Judas.  Later in life took up painting.  Had a notable relationship with sculptor [[Louise Abbema]].  Bisexual.
