==Description==

Gospel singer, whose work is considered a precursor to Rock & Roll music.  Known as the Godmother of Rock & Roll.  Notable songs include 'Down by the Riverside' (1944) and 'Rock Me' (1942).  Had a notable, though secret, relationship with fellow singer [[Marie Knight]], with whom she also toured, performed and recorded hits such as 'Up Above My Head' and 'Gospel Train'.  Inducted into the Blues Hall of Fame (2007) and Rock & Roll Hall of Fame (2017).
