American writer, playwright. Many of his novels contain homosexual themes, and caused both sensation and scandal at the time of publishing. Twice ran for congressional politics. Known for his political commentary and intellect. Notable novels, of 31 written, include 'Myra Breckenridge' (1968), and Lincoln (1984). Notable screenplays include 'Ben Hur'(1959), 'The Best Man' (1960), and 'Billy The Kid' (1989). Noted for his numerous essays and commentaries. Live-in partner for 53 years was Howard Austen, though it was a secret relationship.
