Description
Novelist and essayist. Recipient of the Prix Femina and the Erasmus Prize, she was the first woman elected to the Académie française, in 1980. Published books include the novel 'Memoirs of Hadrian' (1951). Among Yourcenar’s other works are the short stories collected in 'Nouvelles orientale's (1938; Oriental Tales), the prose poem 'Feux' (1936; Fires), and the short novel 'Le Coup de grâce' (1939; Eng. trans. Coup de Grâce). Bisexual.
