Notable for novels 'Lost Language of Cranes' (1986), which has been made into a film; 'While England Sleeps' (1993); 'The Page Turner' (1998), also made into a film; and 'Martin Baumann' (2000). Recent book is 'The Two Hotel Francforts' (2013). Controversy after charged with plagiarism in 1994. Member of the Creative Writing faculty at the University of Florida. Editor of the literary journal 'Subtropics'.
