Description
White House Counsel since 2022, and Advisor to President Joe Biden, being the first LGBTQ individual to hold the post. Former Deputy Counsel to the President. Former Associate Attorney General of the United States government since 2014, whose primary responsibility it is to advise the Attorney General and the Deputy Attorney General on all legal matters. Formerly led the Civil Division of the Department of Justice (2012-2014). Led the team of Department lawyers coordinating the government-wide implementation of the Supreme Court’s decision in United States v. Windsor, which struck down Section 3 of the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA). Senior Counsellor to the Attorney General (2010-2012). Former partner in the law firm WilmerHale of Washington, D.C.
