Democratic member of the Illinois State House of Representatives from 2007 to 2023, and House Majority Leader since 2019 (being the first out gay lawmaker to hold that position). HIV positive. Considered instrumental player in getting equal marriage legislation passed in the state of Illinois. Formerly an executive for a trade association and chief of staff to a Chicago city council member.
