Description
President of The Tenement Museum in New York City. Former Executive Director, Arcus Foundation (2012-2017). Founder and leader of the Gay, Lesbian, and Straight Education Network (GLSEN) to combat bullying in schools. Joined the Obama administration as Assistant Deputy Secretary of Education and director of the Office of Safe & Drug-Free Schools in 2009 - 2011. Formerly headed a non-profit organization, 'Be the Change' dedicated to addressing the growing problem of economic inequality in the United States (2011-2012). Author of numerous books, including 'Telling Tales Out of School' (1997, Lambda Literary Award), 'Mama's Boy, Preacher's Son: A Memoir' (2006) and 'One Teacher in the 21st Century' (2015).
