Former reporter for The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal and a former press critic for Newsweek. Author of the books '1968 In America', 'The Gay Metropolis' (Lambda Literary Award), and 'The Cost of Courage'. Inducted into the LGBT Journalists Hall of Fame (2015).
