Professional soccer referee, including FIFA and UEFA, beginning in 1980. Refereed the UEFA Cup final in 1993 and the 1992 European Championship. On retirement, became head of 'Referee-Affairs Professional Football' for the Royal Dutch Football Association. One of the first professional athletes to come out in Netherlands. LGBTQ activist; co-founders of Homo LesBische Federatie Nederland. The John Blankenstein Foundation, and the John Blankenstein Award, is named in his honour.
