First openly gay man in the US to be elected to public office, San Francisco Board of Supervisors. Assassinated. Presidential Medal of Freedom posthumously, 2009. The award-winning movies 'Milk' (2009) and 'The Life and Times of Harvey Milk' (1984), are a biography of his time in politics. The 'Harvey Milk Foundation' was established in his memory.
