Notable for award-winning memoir 'Heaven's Coast' (2009) about the dying by AIDS of his lover, and his third award-winning book of poetry 'My Alexandria' (1993) about the AIDS epidemic. Success as a poet has inspired many gay male poets. Winner of the National Book Award for Poetry (2008).
