Activist and campaigner for research into motor neurone disease (MND), also known as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), a degenerative neurological condition, a disease which eventually took his life. Former Director of Research for the Better Together campaign in the Scottish Independence Referendum (2012-2016). Awarded the British Empire Medal for his efforts (2015). Partner is Joe Pike
