Film maker and actor, founder of New German Cinema. Also worked in live theatre. Notable films include 'Ali: Fear Eats the Soul' (1977), 'Like a Bird on a Wire' (1975), 'The Marriage of Maria Braun' (1978), and 'Lola' (1981). Works are often controversial and provocative, and had the reputation of an enfant terrible. Died of a drug overdose.
