Description

Author of fiction books and poetry which explore aspects of the black diaspora. Book reviewer and literary critic. Professor of Creative Writing at Brunel University. The first black woman and first black British author to win the Booker Prize for Literature. Vice-Chair of the Royal Society of Literature. Books include 'Blonde Roots' (2008), 'The Emperor's Babe' (2001), 'Hello Mum' (2010), and 'Girl, Woman, Other' (2018, Booker Prize winner). Founded the Brunel University African Poetry Prize and co-founded Spread the Word writer development agency. Co-founded Britain's first black women's theatre company, Theatre of Black Women. Became a Member of the Order of the British Empire (2009), elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts (2006) and the Royal Society of Literature (2004).
