Description
Filmmaker, notable for her experimental films that explore issues of gender identity. Professor at the European Graduate School in Saas-Fee. Notable films include 'I Was/I Am' (1983), 'Bent Time' (1983), 'Optic Nerve' (1985), and 'A Horse Is Not A Metaphor' (2009, Short Film Winner at Berlin International Film Festival). Author of her autobiography 'HAMMER! Making Movies Out of Sex and Life' (2010). Has had retrospective showings throughout the world, including the Tate Gallery and MOMA. Creator of The Barbara Hammer Lesbian Experimental Filmmaking Grant.
