Early explorer of the American west, and military officer. He was successively a cornetcy in the 6th Dragoon Guards, and a Lieutenancy and later Captain in the 15th King's Hussars. Awarded the Victoria Cross for his military exploits. Inherited the Laird of Grandtully and became 5th Baronet of Murthly and of Blair on the death of his older brother. His same-sex relationships are detailed in his diaries and autobiographical novels, including a long term relationship with French-Canadian Cree hunter Antoine Clement.
