Description
Professor Emeritus of Drama and English at the University of Toronto (1971-1996) and University of Victoria (1956-1971). An expert in the history of Canadian theatre and Anglo-Irish literature. Former Principal of Massey College, University of Toronto (at the time, called Master of the College, 1988-1996). Founding president of the Association for Canadian Theatre History, and served as the chair of the International Association for Anglo-Irish Literature. She was the co-general editor of the Cornell Yeats series of manuscripts, and the founding co-editor of the Canadian Journal of Theatre Research. Corresponding scholar of the Academy of the Shaw Festival, and director of the publishers Colin Smythe Limited and the Hedgerow Press. Awarded six honorary doctorates from Queen's University (1977), the University of Victoria (1989), McGill University (1989), the University of Windsor (1990), the University of Toronto (1999), and Concordia University (2000). Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada (1976), Royal Irish Academy (2011), and the Royal Society of Arts (1987). Appointed an Officer of the Order of Canada (1995).
