Description

Classical opera music composer. Notable works include 'The Consul' (1950, Pulitzer Prize) and 'The Saint of Bleecker Street' (1955, Pulitzer Prize). Composed his Christmas opera 'Amahl and the Night Visitors' for NBC, the first opera ever written for television in America. Recipient of a Kennedy Center Honor (1984). In 2010, the main theatre in Spoleto, Italy was renamed as the 'Teatro Nuovo Gian Carlo Menotti'. Founded the Spoleto Festival in the United States in 1958, and 10 years later expanded it to the Melbourne (Australia) Spoleto Festival, now known as the Melbourne International Arts Festival. Partner was composer Samuel Barber.
