Description
Tried a citizens's arrest on Robert Mugabe several times, and was beaten up for this by his bodyguards in 2001. Member, and leading activist, of the Gay Liberation Front; founder and member of the queer human rights group OutRage! Member of the left-wing of the Green Party. Prolific writer in the gay and lesbian press. Launched the world's first organisation dedicated to defending the human rights of people with HIV, the UK AIDS Vigil Organisation (UKAVO). Ran unsuccessfully for parliamentary political office on a number of occasions. Columnist, including the newspaper 'The Guardian' and 'New Statesmen'. Wrote regular columns for The Guardian’s Comment is Free website, and hosted a weekly online TV current affairs programme 'Talking With Tatchell' (2007). Author of several books, notably 'AIDS: A Guide to Survival' (1987), 'Europe in the Pink' (1992), and 'We Don't Want to March Straight: Masculinity, Queers and the Military' (1995). The Peter Tatchell Foundation is a human rights organization. Recipient of numerous awards for his activism.
