Tennis player. Winner of ten Grand Slam titles in the late 1920s and '30s. World Number 1 in 1936. Author of several books, including 'Modern Tennis' (1933) and 'Improve Your Tennis' (1935). First woman to wear shorts at Wimbledon. Member, International Tennis Hall of Fame, 1962. Member, National Gay and Lesbian Sports Hall of Fame (2015). Life-long partner was Virginia Gurnee.
