Description
Most famous of the Roman poets and considered a national hero. Composed many a paen to lost love. Poems include 'Aeneid' (which tells the story of Rome’s legendary founder), 'The Eclogues' (ten short pastoral poems on rural subjects), and 'The Georgics' (a longer didactic poem), all of which became standard texts in Roman schools. Went to Rome to study rhetoric, medicine, and astronomy, which he soon abandoned for philosophy. Known for his especially close relationship with a man named Alexander, whom he wrote about in the guise of “Alexis”. Proper name is Publius Vergilius Maro.
