Description

Ballet dancer and choreographer. Former Director of the Royal Ballet since its inception in 1963, and is credited with bringing it to international acclaim. Choreographed works include 'Sleeping Beauty', 'La Fille Mal Gardee', and 'Enigma Variations'. Had a long term professional relationship with ballet dancer Ninette de Valois. Recipient of numerous awards, including Coomander of the Order of the British Empire (1950), Knight Bachelor (1962), Companion of Honour (1970), the Order of Merit (1977), and Legion of Honour (1960).
