Description
Pen name of Kimitake Hiraoka. Author, poet, playwright, actor. Considered one of the most important Japanese authors of the 20th century, having been nominated for the Nobel Prize in Literature three times. Notable for 'The Temple of the Golden Pavilion' (1956). His first novel, 'Kamen no kokuhaku' (1949; 'Confessions of a Mask'), is a partly autobiographical work that describes a homosexual who must mask his abnormal sexual preferences from the society around him. Work is considered avant-garde. Married, but had sexual relations with men. Died by ritual suicide after attempting a coup-d'état to restore the emperor to power in Japan.
