Poet, winner of the Pulitzer Prize in Poetry (1988) for 'Partial Accounts: New and Selected Poems', and the National Book Award for Poetry for 'Effort at Speech'. Was Poet Laureate Consultant in Poetry to the Library of Congress from 1978 to 1980. Chancellor of the Academy of American Poets (1964-1987). Teacher at several universities.
