Description

Member of the California State Senate since 2016. First woman — and first out woman — to run the largest state Senate in the nation when she was appointed Speaker for 2018. Former Speaker of the Assembly (2014-2016) and Democratic member of the California State Assembly, and former member and Mayor of San Diego City Council. First lesbian speaker of the California House. Recieved the Gay and Lesbian Leadership Award from the national Gay & Lesbian Victory Fund in honor of her recent service to the city of San Diego as deputy mayor. Member of the California Legislative LGBT Caucus.
