Briefly Vice President of the United States (1853) for six weeks before his death. Formerly involved in local politics in North Carolina, then a Representative from North Carolina (1811-1816), Senator (1819-1844, and 1848-1852), and Minister to France (1844-1846). Democratic Party member. A notable player in the politics of the country during the pre-civil war period who was known as a moderate on the issues that divided the North from the South. Lived for 13 years until his death with James Buchanan who became the fifteenth President of the United States.
