Description
Known for portraiture, and also for explicit photographs of gay men engaged in sex. Died of AIDS. Work has sparked considerable controversy including censorship and obscenity. Gained notoriety when a group of U.S. Congressman were upset at the funding his show received from the National Endowment for the Arts, forcing the Institute for Contemporary Arts to cancel the show - it was subsequently shown at the Washington Project for the Arts to large crowds.
