Air Force officer, who shot to fame when he appeared on the front page of Time newsmagazine as a gay member of the armed forces in his fight against the anti-gay policies of the military. His subsequent fight to stay in the military despite being gay was a rallying point for the LGBTQ community. Died of AIDS.
