Description

Founder, Human Rights Campaign (HRC) in 1980, formerly called Human Rights Campaign Fund, and served as its first Executive Director. Founded the Minnesota Committee for Gay Rights (later Gay Rights Legislative Committee) in 1971. Former co-chairman of the Board of Directors of the National Gay Task Force (later NGLTF). Director of the Gay Rights National Lobby (1978). Author of his autobiography, 'Bringing Lesbian and Gay Rights Into the Mainstream: Twenty Years of Progress' (2006). Died of AIDS.
