Pulitzer Prize, 1923, for the book 'One of Ours'. Notable also for 'Death Comes for the Archbishop' (1927), 'Oh! Pioneers' (1913), and 'The Song of the Lark' (1915). Subject matter of her work is predominantly frontier life, and is nostalgic and conservative in form. Contributor to the Nebraska State Journal, Home Monthly, Pittsburgh Leader, and McClure's Magazine. Known for her masculine appearance, and lived with editor Edith Lewis for 39 years. Recipient of numerous awards and honours.
