Description
Founder of the Oscar Wilde Memorial Bookshop in New York City. LGBTQ activist and organizer of Pride events, including the first Gay Pride Parade (originally called Gay Street Liberation Day) in New York City in 1970 which occurred after he participated in the Stonewall riots of 1969. Earlier had organized 'sip-ins' at local New York City bars, an action which eventually led to the overturn of a law that banned gays from bars in the city. Volunteer for the Mattachine Society of New York. Co-founder of the gay activist group Homophile Youth Movement in Neighborhoods (HYMN, 1967) and began to publish its periodical, HYMNAL. Had a relationship with Harvey Milk. Recipient of a Lambda Literary Award for Publisher Services (1992).
