Democratic member of the Senate of Virginia since 2012, after previously being a member of the Virginia House of Delegates. Former president of the Virginia Partisans Gay & Lesbian Democratic Club. Was the third openly gay elected official in Virginia and the first ever openly gay member of the Virginia General Assembly.
