Description

Ballet dancer and director. Former premiere dancer with the Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo (1938-1952). Subsequently became Artistic Director of many ballet companies throughout the United States, including Washington (as founding director, Washington National Ballet), Chicago, Cincinnati, Oakland, Pittsburgh, and American Ballet Theatre. He is noted for having popularized modern ballet in the United States and the preservation of historical ballets, such as those of George Ballanchine and Frederick Ashton.
