Description
First nations poet and author, and Professor, University of Toronto First Nations House. Former writer-in-residence, University of Guelph, and cultural director of the Centre for Indigenous Theatre in Toronto. Writer and commentator on feminist issues, aboriginal issues, and politics. Writing is an innovative fusion of poetry, fiction, non-fiction, myth and memoire that revives traditional Indigenous stories to frame her modern tales. First book, the autobiographical novel 'Bobbi Lee: Indian Rebel' (1975, 1990), was one of the first Indigenous works published in Canada. Expert on First Nations history and culture. Co-founder of the En'owkin International School of Writing, a learning institute in Penticton, British Columbia. Recipient of a Bonham Centre Award from the Mark S. Bonham Centre for Sexual Diversities Studies at the University of Toronto (2017).
