Well-off landowner, writer, and traveler. Prolific diarist who compiled a 26-volume diary which details her lesbian relationships, business concerns, daily life, and work improving her home, Shibden Hall. These diaries provide a peek into the intimate lives of 19th-century lesbians and pioneers in the struggle for women’s rights and independence. Notable biography in two volumes written by Helena Whitbread, 'The Secret Diaries of Miss Anne Lister' (Virago, 1988, 1992). These diaries were the basis of a popular television show about Anne Lister called 'Gentleman Jack' (2018).
