Description

Pseudonym of Louis Marie-Julien Viaud. Captain in the French Navy. Adventure writer who wrote based on his own life, notably in Turkey and as a supporter of Turkish Independence. Books include ' Mon Frère Yves (1883), 'Pêcheur d'Islande' (1886), 'Au Maroc' (1890), 'Les Désenchantées' (1906), and 'La Mort de Philae' (1908). Recipient of France's Legion of Honor, and a member of the Academie Francaise (1892). Known for his elaborate theme-based costume parties.
