Description
Elected as an Independent to the Dail (Parliament) in 2016, and subsequently appointed Minister for Children and Youth Affairs, being the first open lesbian government minister in the country. Independent Senator (2011-2016), being the first open lesbian member of that chamber. Member, Irish Human Rights Commission. Senator. Former CEO, National Women's Council of Ireland. Former CEO of the National Women's Council of Ireland. Co-founder of An Cosán, Ireland's largest community education organization. Notable for her law case to have her same-sex marriage with her partner [[Ann Louise Gilligan], which occurred in Canada, to be recognized in Ireland - a case which failed in Ireland's High Court.
